US report claims China shoots down its own satellite
By Li Xiaokun (China Daily)
Updated: 2010-07-19 07:46
BEIJING - For the second time in three years, China has shot down one of its dysfunctional satellites with a missile, US-based Foreign Policy magazine reported in its latest issue.
The destruction of the satellite, which reportedly happened in January, shows China's defensive missile ability, the magazine said.
The reported firing took place at almost the same time as a successful missile interception test that China conducted on Jan 11.
The website of Hong Kong-based Phoenix TV said the anti-satellite missile test, if confirmed, is likely related to the missile interception test, which occurred at the peak of a dispute between Beijing and Washington on a massive US arms sales deal to Taiwan.
During the interception test, US agencies spotted two missiles launched from two locations from the Chinese mainland, colliding outside the atmosphere, a Pentagon spokesperson said.
China's Foreign Ministry then said the interception test was defensive in nature and was not targeting any country.
Many military scholars believe it was targeting the Patriot missile defense system that Taiwan was trying to buy from the US at that time.
China's first anti-satellite missile test was conducted successfully on Jan 11, 2007, destroying an abandoned Chinese satellite.
The Foreign Policy article did not reveal any other details of the move or any response from the US government.
Chinese military experts even warned that Washington appeared determined to surround China with US-build anti-missile systems.
However, Peng Guangqian, a Beijing-based military expert, said the newly reported anti-satellite missile test was not necessarily related to the US arms deal with Taiwan.
"It was a large test which needs time to prepare for," he said.
"If confirmed, I think it was a further step for China to improve its defensive ability in space."
Peng also said that China has long advocated the principle of a nonmilitary outer space, on which the US has long kept silent.

I don't understand this. The Patriot system is a surface-to-air missile. Why would China try to target a surface-to-air system in Taiwan's own backyard? That's using Missile A to intercept Missile B, which was originally itself intended to intercept Missile C.
Not to mention that a Taiwanese Patriot would reach its target (an incoming Chinese SRBM) much sooner than any subsequent Chinese missile would reach the Patriot missile.

Nor surely would a Patriot be used to intercept an SRBM outside the atmosphere - would it?
So it sounds more like a Ballistic Missile test, which does rather make more sense.
Also, to counter Patriot defences, would it not simply make more sense to fire an initial salvo of low value drone rockets with no targeting or warheads etc, simple to draw out and exhaust the Patriots before firing the real deals?
Firing a hyper advanced/fast counter missile to intercept the interceptor, just sounds like bad economics to me.

I mean it happened in "January", Man! That six months past. If true, it's another moment we Chinese can be proud, but yet, it takes a "US-based Foreign Policy magazine reported" to lay it tob us, the Chinese public, this news, and still more ironic, it was the People's Daily who covered a story aired by this foreign-based Foreign Policy magazine on an "unknown" Chinese event. I mean isn't that an insult?
If this story is true, then how sad... Because that would mean that we the Chinese people, are still second class citizens in within our own Chinese world because it takes a foreign press to update us on the gooings ons of our very own country...

Just for the funs of it.

!!! I mean Christ! It's early AM here in the west coast North America when this news popped out of the "People's Daily = CNN I suppose" and just as I was about to pop it here, as always, it's either you or it's the Maestro who cheated when sprinting to the finish line.
Considered that your threads criticizing the Party will attract and draw out all the hawks and create pages long fierce discussions, you better leave these kinds of "casual" topics to others.
What you also can think about is to just come back to China, then you are guaranteed to get "Chinese" news earlier than me, because I doubt I would wake up so early. What time is in the West coast right now? Like 5am-6am at the time of your posting???

Anyway, here how I had lay it out with a bunch of emailers buddies in my spam listings so people know what I think about all of this:

Did you notice that the People's Daily got the source from China Daily? This shows again that the China Daily is slightly more progressive than the other mouthpieces. And the official governmental not making any statement yet show us that it took Beijing by surprise this leak. The reason for me to copy/paste the whole article is to wonder if it will be revised over the day/week.
If news true, my bet is that China & USA (among with other political power blocs) made a deal to keep this news quiet, but as usual in the US they love leaking out information in the most sensitive timing, or one can wonder if it is not someone from the China team who did the leaking. This is all related with the recent Korean bullsh*ts, and someone believed it would be a good idea to show the world the Chinese strengths, either as a news source for certain people in Washington to "save face" and not do the drills in the Yellow Sea, or to solidify the "China threat" theory among the hawks, and many other theories can be thought of.
Whatever the reasons for the leak/disclosure and cover up, I do think the least likely is to create an "insult". To call it an insult is a bit extreme imo. Yes indeed this is an advancement the Chinese people should be proud of and it might have been better to organize another Olympics/Expo like ceremony to fuel nationalism, but like your own email, how many news mortals like us are exempted? I bet much more than we could ever imagine.

Here's something even more outlandish. take it to CD and knock them out of their pants will ya, Itchi. I mean if this plasma thingy is legit, imagine what it can do to our J-10 and other top of the line fighters once we apply the stuff in them sexy birds we have at home. I mean they'll all be invisible to even our own birds and radars
BTW, soft power or peaceful rise is OK. But there's a time and place to apply them and a time and place where not to apply it. When we are being bullied is a time we definitely "MUST NOT" apply the philosophy of "peaceful rise". That is where I was leading and I believe that's where Roger was leading also.
And no, unlike Roger, I don't do not see you or our other red guardians as traitors and or fakes. I see you guys as having a difference of viewpoint, which is a healthy thing for places like NCCF.
Hell, I don't know about any of this anymore... I mean this is starting to be getting out of proportion... "Plasma stealth technology and development team"? Are we serious? The following article seem to suggest there are such studies going on in China and I do believe there has to be such programs. But is the science really this far in advance in China? I wish, yes! But believe? Well I'm a bit on the skepticism side...
Story follows:

As a physicist, do you buy any of this, Joe?

... I did say the technology of stealth will go the way of the doodle bird just like the geometric swept wing now didn't I? Those F-35's? man! theyb are out. I'm up to my ears with this one with my email buddies. No time for CD until later so knock them dead Man!
Actually to my surprise I kinda like CD, except for the lost of posts etc but you learn to live with it, but at least to my surprise CD would allow such a big variety of opinions in such a big state mouthpiece being ran freely. Or when I was writing about Zhao Zhiyang and the Tiananmen case in that 'hypocritical western media' thread, I thought that the thread would be closed soon. I think I will be spending more time over there. But they really should do something about those obvious trolls, too many interesting threads will decay to some meaningless discussions.

What I can't stand though is not being able to listen to other's opinions, propaganda for extremists views (like those pretending to be Chinese living in India) and refer to name callings (such as traitor blablabla) etc, this show the exact lack of confidence and non-productivity in which I occasionally despise. You must have seen those so-called democratic Taiwanese parliament's fights in public? I despise not being able to communicate and come to a solution that would benefit the interests of the majority for the short, medium and long term. I think the Party is in this respect much more effective and leaders are capable of actually coming to an effective solution handling all these complicated problems. We should have more people with different viewpoints, who like you actually is open to others with different of viewpoints.
