"HMS Queen Elizabeth" and "HMS Prince of Wales" thats the new carrier gonna build, each of them are over 280 meters in length and masses over 65.000 tons. These new ships are three times the size of the actual "Invincible" carrier class with 20.700 tons. They will be the greatest carrier UK ever build, only second to the US carrier of the "Nimitz" class. Maiden voyage will be 2014 respectively 2016.

Each of them will only cost the British a pocket money of 3 billion Pound ( 3,8 billion Euro) but cost will increase by implementing additional fighter jet of F-35 up to 12 billion Pound ( 15 Billion Euro). BAE System and BVT surface are the main contract partner for building these monster.

As news stated that the decision to build these carriers are also because world political has changed for UK as it facing rising competition from India, China and Russia, whose are currently building new carrier. Especially Russia announced that it is planning to build in the next 20 years 6 new carrier strike groups. Though it can be doubted that Russia can or will once again enter a new arms reace against the west. The situation of the the Russian army is very poor.

Are these nuclear powered?
It would give the Brits the most powerful navy in Europe either way...
"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children." - Dwight D. Eisenhower, 1953.

No they are Diesel powered and have no Steam Cats.

I am not overly enthusiastic, but then I have my doubts about Super Carriers generally.
